Go Compare This With A Half-Decent Advert.

Television commercials are not as entertaining as they once were. It seems the days of genuinely funny adverts are pretty much gone. There have always been the crappy soap powder ones, but there was a time when quite a few were actually worth looking forward to.

And one of the very worst advertising campaigns I have seen (for quite a number of years) is the one for ‘Go Compare’. If you thought that the very worst commercials had already been created and televised then think again. These ones really do take some beating.

It all hinges on the company’s opera-singing mascot. I am not opera’s biggest fan as it is (although there are a few select pieces I enjoy) and having to suffer this rotund buffoon makes my soul bleed. There is just something about this guy; I am not a violent person at all, but the mere sight of him makes me want to cause the man severe physical harm. I could quite happily go to sleep at night whilst images of him being tortured play across my mind.

And, as if that were not enough, he then proceeds to ‘sing’. My God; when I first heard it I was convinced that I must be in purgatory. Not since hearing Limp Bizkit performing their song for ‘Mission Impossible’ have I felt such terrible pain in my musical appreciation glands. Seriously, I would rather apply for a Secondary education job in Putney. It is truly awful. If ‘Go Compare’ were trying to come up with an immensely annoying ditty then they have succeeded big time. And if they wanted it to be something that stuck in your mind, then it does. But it is for all the wrong reasons. Having a wickedly barbed javelin stuck in your mind would be a far more pleasurable experience than this.

If I ever need to use a price comparison website, then I will actually go out of my way to avoid ‘Go Compare’ simply because of their abysmal adverts. And I’m damn sure that no-one will ever go looking for them online after this campaign.
